From Italy To France To The World Wide Web: Tracing Baccarat’s Roots

Tagged as the game of the so-called “gambling elite,” baccarat was initially perceived as the game exclusive to high rollers. As a matter of fact, private rooms were even allotted for baccarat aficionados who further sealed its reputation as the game of the rich and the famous.

However, as years go by, this stereotype slowly faded away. With the introduction of online casinos, more and more players, regardless of their social status, have enjoyed this particular game.

Baccarat’s origins
Through the years, heated debates have cropped up with regards to how baccarat started. This can be attributed to the fact that the term “baccarra” which means nothing or zero is present in the Italian and French vocabulary. It is because of this similarity that certain problems arose with regards to attributing baccarat’s humble origins.

Italy or France?

Despite of the arguments about baccarat’s beginnings, most of the contemporary historians agree on one thing—that the game, indeed, originated from Italy and was later on introduced in France by no other than Charles VIII.

How the game is played

Simplicity is perhaps one of the major reasons behind baccarat’s popularity, In order to win, the player simply needs to get a total of nine (9) points or closer. Usually, they are given two (2) to three (3) cards. The value of these cards should be added together until the desired value is reached. Cards from 2 to 9 retain their face value, whereas a different value is given to other cards. Face cards such as the queen, jack and king has no value at all. The same thing applies to the number 10 card. Ace, on the other hand, has a value of 1.

What if the total value is greater than 9?

Rookie players tend to be confused when it comes to determining the winners. This is most especially true if the total value of the cards exceeds 9. In this case, the player simply needs to subtract 10 from the whole value of the cards that they received. For example, a player who gets a  2 and a 9 literally gets a total value of 11. But in the game, 10 should be subtracted. Therefore, the player will only have a total value of 1.

Needless to say, the exclusivity that baccarat once enjoyed is no longer practiced and observed. As mentioned, more and more players are now enjoying this game. From Italy to France and now in the World Wide Web, baccarat is indeed, a worthy game to play.
